2013 Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year

~ Abbott and Miriam Ladd of Belgrade ~

Maine Outstanding Tree Farmers of 2013, Abbott and Miriam Ladd of Belgrade, were honored at the 59th Maine Tree Farm and Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine Field Day in September. Abbott passed away after winning the award but before the Field Day could take place; he would have been pleased by the turnout and the wonderful tent exhibit featuring his and his family’s forest-related history and accomplishments.

Held at the Alton “Dude” Brown Memorial Tree Farm in Vasselboro, the day featured numerous events including tours of the Tree Farm and the heron rookery, logging demonstrations, a Lombard loghauler, woodsman’s team and hunting dog demonstrations and presentations about invasive plants, tree pruning and succession planning, among others.

Maine Tree Farm Committee Chair Dick Morse and SWOAM President Tom Doak conducted the lunch program which featured tributes from friends, colleagues and family members to Abbott Ladd, a career forester, fifty year member of the Maine Tree Farm Committee and SWOAM’s first executive director.
